Puako Petroglyphs
Located Located a mile south of Papuna Beach on Highway 19 is the Puako Road turnoff, where there is public access to the beach areas of Puako. Puako is a very quaint town consisting of one road, one store, one apartment condo building and interesting houses ranging from luxury mansions to shacks. Though small, Puako is a treasure chest of Hawaiian history and houses the Puako Petroglyph Fields that can be found on the Malama Petroglyph Trail. The word “petroglyph” comes from the greek words, “petros” for rock, and “glyphein” to carve - the ancient Hawaiians referred to petroglyphs as k`i`i pohaku or stone art. The k`i`i pohaku or petroglyphs of Puako were used as a system of language, for storytelling and to keep historical records. The fields at Puako are easily accessible and offer over 3,000 of the best examples of early human and mythical figures. To avoid the heat of the Puako Petroglyph Fields they are best visited in the early morning or in the late afternoon. For more information please visit HERE
